SPEAKERS

Talks on climate change will be given by leading Irish speakers including:

Patsy Toland and Tara McGrath, International Development Society. A collaboration between Self Help Africa and The International Development Society at UCC brings a new initiative for development workshops. The Invent Tent helps to create new innovations for the developing world in a open and fun environment. Patsy Toland( Self Help Africa) and Tara McGrath will speak about the importance of practical ideas for the developing world, showcasing new projects such as fuel efficient stoves and methods of conservation that will relate directly to the problems of climate change. This workshop promises to stimulate ideas and provide understanding to people of all ages and skill sets, to show that everyone can make a difference.

Doherty Stewart, Green Homes Campaign. Green Home: Calling all householders: Find out how you and your family can save money by reducing household bills. This is also your chance to do ‘your bit’ for the Environment with An Taisce’s Green Home programme. Green Home is an environmental programme developed by An Taisce and funded by the EPA under the National Waste Prevention Programme and run by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce. The programme extends the Green Schools message beyond the school gates and into the households of the wider community. By raising awareness, Green Home proposes ways to deal effectively with current and future challenges and issues associated with waste, energy, transport and water. The programme aims to support and direct householders as they take actions that reduce their impact on the environment while saving money on household bills. The programme in July has several thousand members through participating Green-Schools primary schools and community groups. Schools and community groups are awarded for their participation at Green Home award ceremonies. Any individual can visit the website www.greenhome.ie become a member and learn about ways to save money, access current environmental information, see how ‘green’ their household is and enter Green Home competitions.

Craig Benton, Stop Food Waste Campign. An EPA funded initiative brings ecologist and resource management specialist Craig Benton to discuss our consumer society’s generation of waste and the options we have to deal with it. Our individual and collective choices do affect global warming so the specific focus of this presentation will be on the prevention of food waste and an overview of the composting systems available to handle food and garden materials at home so people can save money and the planet.

Gavin Harte, Climate For Change. In association with the EPA, SEAI and the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government, Gavin Harte will present his unique talk on climate change and energy "Climate for Change". The story of climate change is directly connected to the amount of energy we use and nowadays we take that energy completely for granted. Understanding this link between our everyday energy use and climate change is critical if we are going to do anything about it. Gavin Harte's multimedia presentation offers a mix of audience participation and a stimulating presentation with the most up-to-date information and thinking on the climate change and energy story and our part in this story.
